Paint.NET is a popular, and surprisingly versatile, image editing application that has been around for well over a decade. Originally developed as a more powerful alternative to the basic Microsoft Paint application that shipped with earlier versions of Windows, Paint.NET evolved into a much more complete editing tool, including many features available in professional software suites such as Adobe Photoshop.
The free application can be downloaded from the developer"s website at GetPaint.net, but in the not-too-distant future, you"ll also be able to get it from the Windows Store. Responding to a user enquiry about the possibility of Windows Store availability, developer Rick Brewster said:
It"s at the top of my list. I"m going to release a 4.0.17 update and then focus just on pushing to Windows Store.
The most recent release of Paint.NET was version 4.0.16, which arrived in mid-April. It"s not yet clear when the next update will arrive, or how long after that it will take for the app to launch in the Windows Store.
You can track the latest releases of Paint.NET, and other popular Windows applications, on the Neowin Software hub.
