Once again, we find ourselves at the second Tuesday of the month, and as Microsoft usually does on this occasion, it"s time for supported versions of Windows to get updates, mostly focusing on security or bug fixes. While Windows 10 is the version of Windows that gets most attention these days, Windows 8.1 is still supported, and Windows 7, well, isn"t. Unless your organization has opted to pay for Extended Security Updates, that is, in which case there are some updates for you too.
As usual, this month"s updates come in two variants. There"s a Monthly Rollup update, which includes both security updates and other general, and a security-only update, if you want the least possible amount of changes made to your system. Generally, the Monthly Rollup updates install automatically through Windows Update, while you have to find the security-only updates manually if you want them.
One thing you"ll notice across all these updates is that Microsoft is disabling the RemoteFX vGPU feature and no longer supporting it. This is because Microsoft has found a security vulnerability with it, and instead of fixing it, it will just be disabled.
Starting with Windows 8.1, this month"s cumulative update is KB4565541, and it can be downloaded manually here. Here"s what"s new in this release:
Addresses an issue that might prevent some applications from printing documents that contain graphics or large files after installing Windows Updates released June 9, 2020.
Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Apps, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Kernel, Windows MSXML, Windows File Server and Clustering, Windows Remote Desktop, Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows SQL components.
There"s one known issue with this update, and it"s been around for a while:

Certain operations, such as rename, that you perform on files or folders that are on a Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) may fail with the error, “STATUS_BAD_IMPERSONATION_LEVEL (0xC00000A5)”. This occurs when you perform the operation on a CSV owner node from a process that doesn’t have administrator privilege. | Do one of the following:
Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release. |
As for the security-only update for Windows 8.1, it"s KB4565540, and you can download it manually here. It includes the following changes:
- Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Apps, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Kernel, Windows MSXML, Windows File Server and Clustering, Windows Remote Desktop, and Windows SQL components.
The single known issue is the same as the one for the Monthly Rollup update.
For Windows 7, as mentioned above, you"ll need to be paying for Extended Security Updates to get any updates now. The Monthly Rollup update is KB4565524, and you can head here to download it manually. Here"s what"s new in that one:
- Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Apps, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Kernel, Windows Remote Desktop, Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, and Windows SQL components.
As for the security-only update, it"s KB4565539, and you can download it manually here. It actually has the same exact changelog this time. Both updates also have the same known issue, which is the same one listed above for Windows 8.1.
