Patch Tuesday: Here's what's new for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1

Today is Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of the month, when Microsoft releases updates for all supported versions of Windows. While there was a wide range of updates for Windows 10, older versions get patched as well, including Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2012.

If you"re on Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, you"ll get KB4467107. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes:

  • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Graphics, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows Kernel, and Windows Server .

There"s also a known issue to be aware of:

Symptom Workaround
After you apply this update, the network interface controller may stop working on some client software configurations. This occurs because of an issue related to a missing file, oem<number>.inf. The exact problematic configurations are currently unknown.
  1. To locate the network device, launch devmgmt.msc. It may appear under Other Devices.
  2. To automatically rediscover the NIC and install drivers, select Scan for Hardware Changes from the Action menu.
    • Alternatively, install the drivers for the network device by right-clicking the device and choosing Update. Then choose Search automatically for updated driver software or Browse my computer for driver software.


There"s also a security-only update, KB4467106, which has the same changelog, and no known issue. You can manually download it here.

If you"re on Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2, you"ll get KB4467697. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes:

  • Addresses an issue that causes high CPU usage that results in performance degradation on some systems with Family 15h and 16h AMD processors. This issue occurs after installing the July 2018 Windows updates from Microsoft and the AMD microcode updates that address Spectre Variant 2 (CVE-2017-5715 – Branch Target Injection).

  • Security updates to Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Graphics, Internet Explorer, Windows Wireless Networking, Windows Kernel, and Windows Server.

There are no known issues with this update. The security-only update is KB4467703, it has the same changelog, and you can manually download it here.

Finally, those on the original version of Windows Server 2012 will get KB4467701. You can manually download it here, and it contains the following fixes:

  • Addresses an issue that causes high CPU usage that results in performance degradation on some systems with Family 15h and 16h AMD processors.
