A new update for the Pixel Launcher for the latest Pixel 5 phones is bringing a nifty and long-awaited feature that lets users customize the number of icons in the home screen grid. These customization options have been present for a long time on devices from other OEMs like Samsung, OnePlus, and more, as well as on other third-party launchers and will be a welcome addition for Pixel 5 users.
The way the setting is accessed is similar to other launchers, where users long-press on the home screen and choose the grid option to choose between 5×5, 4×4, 3×3, and 2×2 icon grids. The option with fewer icons increases the size of the icons considerably, making it useful for those that rely on accessibility features. The default setting, however, seems to be set at 5x5.
While the update is rolling out only to Pixel 5 users, folks over At XDA Developers have managed to extract the APK, which can be downloaded from here for users running older Pixel phones. The publication notes that the launcher has been tested on the Pixel 3XL and the Pixel 4, but it should work on all Pixel phones.
While the basic ability to organize the home screen grid – something that might be a deal-breaker – has been absent till now in the Pixel Launcher, the addition of this feature could very well bring back users that prefer Google’s solution.
