Planescape: Torment is a true classic fantasy RPG PC game. Developed and released by Interplay in 1999, it was based on an Advanced Dungeons and Dragons campaign and was both a critical and sales success. Now inXile Entertainment, headed up by Interplay founder Brian Fargo, has announced plans to launch a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment.
Rock Paper Shotgun interviews Fargo about the project, which won"t actually be set in the Planescape setting due to the fact that D&D"s owners Wizards of the Coast won"t allow PC games to be made based on that universe. Instead, the successor will be set in a new universe called Numenera, created by one of the contributors to the original Planescape game Monte Cook.
So what will make this new game worthy of the Torment title? Fargo states:
We know it hasn’t been done often in the game industry, but we’re envisioning Torment as a thematic franchise with certain themes that can expand over different settings and stories. We will focus on the same things that made people appreciate PST so much: overturning RPG tropes; a fantastic, unconventional setting; memorable companions; deep thematic exploration of the human condition; heavy reactivity (i.e., choice and consequences); an intensely personal (rather than epic) story.
inXile plans to use Kickstarter to acquire funds to develop the game, much how they used Kickstarter to fund their upcoming post apocalypse RPG sequel Wasteland 2.
