PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds briefly surpasses Dota 2 as the most played Steam title

Earlier this month, we reported that the PC gaming phenomenon PlayerUnknown"s Battlegrounds has reached a concurrent player base of 570,000 during the weekend of August 8. Since then, the title has continued to grow in popularity, with it briefly surpassing Defense of the Ancients 2 - otherwise known as Dota 2 - as the most active title on Steam, although it has since then fallen to second place.

In a tweet posted by the developer this weekend, it bragged about PUBG surpassing the free-to-play multiplayer game from Valve, with a reported 877,844 players engaging each other online during the weekend. This is quite impressive for a game that hasn"t even officially launched yet, with it going into early-access earlier this year. PlayerUnknown"s Battlegrounds is also scheduled to launch on the Xbox One platform through Xbox Game Preview after Microsoft signed a publishing deal for the title.

According to data-tracking site SteamSpy, the game has reportedly achieved eight million unit sales, making it the best-selling game of 2017 on a single platform, so far. This has to be noted since games like Tom Clancy"s: Wildlands managed to outsell it, but on multiple platforms.

PlayerUnknown"s Battlegrounds is being developed by Bluehole, and is inspired by the film Battle Royale. The game sees one hundred individuals - both in teams or solo - battle it out in an open-world until only one victor remains.
