Rumoured for nearly a week, now Sony has revealed that the Playstation 2 system will have a lower price of $99.99 down from $129.99 for America starting on the 1st of April. Entering its ninth year on the market, the Playstation 2 has sold over 140 million consoles world wide with over 50 million being in America alone.
The Playstation 2 was first released back in 2000 world wide as the successor to the Playstation, the only other console to sell over 100 million thus far, has over the years has managed to become the most poplar and best selling console to date.
With a software line up over over 1900 titles and home to some of the most popular titles over the last decade, two hardware revisions making it even smaller, it can easily be seen as to why it has become so popular with the main stream gaming crowd over the last nine years.
Succeeded by the Playstation 3 in 2006, the Playstation 2 has still managed to sell millions of consoles per year even though its successor was released, though some would put this down to the high price point of the Playstation 3 from release.
A price cut while announced for the US territory has yet to be confirmed for any other areas, more notably the EU/UK and Japan markets which still carry the older price point. The Playstation 3 however is still rumoured and considered by most to need a price cut soon to keep it competitive with other consoles currently on the market.
