Two weeks before E3, Sony Computer Entertainment has decided to slash the price of its immensely popular console by $20 to a new low price of $129.99 US from its previous price of $149.99 US. Earlier this month SCE guru and leader Ken Kutaragi swore that they would not be reducing the price of its aging behemoth. I guess they changed their minds. Lizard Capital, the firm who originally suggested that SCE would reduce the price of the console, has stated they believe Sony will go ahead and slash the price further to $99 US later this year as SCE ramps up for the PS3 launch.
Be prepared to be peppered with all sorts of advertisements pushing this new price point for the PS2. The PS2 is the most popular "older" generation console, with an immense sell through of 101 Million units so far, and an absolutely incredible 1 Billion software units sold. Yes Billion. PS2 also commands a 55.6% market share as of March. And for all of you who do own a PS2, and obviously there are 101 Million of you, Sony intends to support the console for quite sometime to come. As they did with the PS1 when the PS2 launched, they will continue to develop new games and products for the system.
