Sony finally seems to be ready to share the multiplayer space with its competition, as cross-play functionality has rolled out of its initial beta stage to be available for all developers. The company hasn"t made an official announcement regarding this major step yet, but Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan confirmed the news in a recent Wired interview.
Up until now only a handful of games like Fortnite, Rocket League, PlayerUnknown"s Battlegrounds, Paladins, and Dauntless support cross-play across PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, which has been a tough subject for Sony in the past. This new change from Sony should mean we will see a whole lot more games - past and future - combining their communities, even adding more titles onto the PC and Nintendo Switch cross-play lists.
As previously announced, Infinity Ward"s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will be the latest triple-A title to support cross-play across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC right out of the gate when it launches on October 25.
We will have to wait and see if this cross-play initiative will stay consistent on the next generation of consoles Sony and Microsoft are preparing as well. Sony also announced a hefty price cut to its PlayStation Now game streaming service recently, essentially halving the monthly cost in all regions.
