Sony has revealed details of its next big software update for the PlayStation 4, which will be available "soon" for those on the public beta program.
The 4.00 update, codenamed "Shingen", will bring a range of improvements and additions to the console. Today"s announcement comes just a few weeks before the company is set to unveil a new version of the PS4, known as the "Neo".
One of the most visible changes in the 4.00 update will be a refreshed UI. Sony says that "the overall look and feel of the UI remains the same - it just has a fresh coat of paint", which will include new backgrounds, and redesigned icons and popup notifications.
Sony has also overhauled the Quick Menu, which will now only take up "a portion of the screen, meaning you don"t need to leave gameplay entirely" to bring it up. You"ll also find new options in the Quick Menu, including online status of your friends, and you"ll be able to customize the menu too.
The Share Menu has also been revised to make sharing screenshots and videos a bit quicker, and you"ll be able to share video clips to Twitter of up to 140 seconds (an increase from the previous 10-second limit).
Sony says that it"s introducing a much-requested feature in the form of new folders and library organization features, as it explained in its announcement today:
With this update, we’re adding functionality to create folders on PS4’s content launcher and Library. This will help collect your favorite games and select apps in one place for quick and easy access.
We’re also making some pretty big changes to the Library. We’ve added a new tab called Purchased, which will show all of the content you own — games, applications, demos, and betas you’ve participated in. As a result, the Games and Applications tabs focus on content currently installed on your system. This should help de-clutter your library, and make it faster to find the content you’re looking for.
There are some new sorting tools for your Library as well. You’ll be able to sort content by purchase date or install status, and search for specific games and apps via text input.
Along with new Trophy improvements, and a refreshed User Profile, PS4 owners have plenty to look forward to in the Shingen update - and Sony says that there"s even more that it hasn"t announced yet, and which won"t be in the public beta.
More details on the update, including its launch date, will be revealed "in the coming weeks".
