In a rather familiar tale, PlayStation 4 came out ahead of Xbox One in terms of sales for the month of January in the US. It was not all gloomy for the latter as it too experienced good growth, according to Microsoft.
We learned last month of the neck-and-neck sales of the consoles for the month of December with PS4 barely edging out Xbox One. This month, it seems, has seen a repeat of sorts. Although Sony registered yet another win, the green team had a lot to cheer about as it had the "best January ever" with gaming hours increasing 21 percent year-over-year.
Mike Nichols, corporate vice president of Xbox Marketing, remarked:
“Thanks to continued support from our fans, 2017 is off to a strong start as Xbox One game hours grew 21 percent year-over-year,In addition, in the U.S., Xbox One had its best January to date and was the only eighth generation console that saw growth in January compared to the prior year according to NPD Group. Team Xbox is committed to delivering the best gaming experiences for our fans.”
Xbox One saw fewer game releases last month than its rival. Resident Evil 7 was the only AAA title to land on the platform, which was also released on PS4 (with VR capability). This might have been a contributing cause as to why the latter got the better of its competitor.
As Microsoft gears up for its upcoming console code-named Scorpio later this year, it will be interesting to see what lies ahead for both ecosystems.
