Just about a year ago, the Playstation Network got hit with a massive cyber attack that basically shut down Sony"s online gaming service for the Playstation 3 and PSP consoles for several weeks. Today, PSN will be shut down for its users but thankfully, this downtime has been planned for well in advance.
In a post on the official Playstation blog, The company revealed that PSN will be closed down so that Sony can perform some "routine scheduled maintenance" on the service. Details about what is being done during the maintenance period was not announced.
The downtime will begin around 9 am Eastern time today and last until approximately 10 pm Eastern time, or about 13 hours. The Playstation blog states:
During much of this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online. PSN enabled websites will not be able to service users, including this one.
The official Playstation Twitter page will be unaffected by this extended maintenance schedule and Sony will post a note on that page when PSN is back in full operation. The blog also promises to continue to alert Playstation gamers when other maintenance periods are planned on PSN in the future.
