While the Playstation Network console online network may have begun its restoration on Saturday night after being shut down by 23 days, the process hasn"t been completely smooth for some users. CNet"s News.com reports that some Playstation 3 owners complained via their Twitter pages that Sony"s online network kept shutting down at times on Sunday.
Part of the problem is the mass rush of PS3 owners to download the Playstation Network"s required firmware update that also requires user change their passwords before officially signing onto the Playstation Network. In a post on the official European Playstation Network web site earlier on Sunday, Sony said it it was "currently experiencing an extremely heavy load of password resets, so we recently had to turn off services for approximately 30 minutes to clear the queue."
The Playstation Network had been down completely since April 20 after Sony concluded that a cyber attack exposed personal info for tens of millions of its users. Sony has said it has beefed up its online security services before it started to restore the network"s various features on Saturday night. It began by bringing the US servers onlineĀ and on Sunday European countries began restoring its Playstation Network services. Those services include playing online multiplayer games, chat features, trophies, access to third party apps (Netflix, Hulu and others) and more.
Not everything has been brought back online, however. The biggest Playstation Network feature that still isn"t working is the Playstation Store which means Playstation 3 owners cannot purchase and download new demos, DLC packs or full online PS3 and PSP games. Sony says that full services should be restored by the end of May.
