Pokémon GO has become a massive hit in recent weeks, and there are plans to quickly extend its availability to 200 markets around the world. But the Pokémon franchise is much bigger than just one mobile game, of course - along with other video games and trading card games, it"s spawned a vast line of merchandise, as well as TV shows, and a string of movies that made it to cinemas in Japan, and which were also released internationally on DVD and Blu-ray.
But with the huge success of Pokémon GO, the owners of the franchise are keen to capitalize on heightened interest in all things Pokémon. As Variety reports, Legendary Entertainment has acquired the rights to produce a live-action Pokémon movie, and intends to "fast-track" its production, starting in 2017.
The movie will be based on the game Great Detective Pikachu: The Birth of a New Duo which made its debut on the Nintendo 3DS earlier this year.
Unlike earlier Pokémon movies, the new one will be shown in cinemas worldwide, with international distribution handled by Universal Pictures.
