In this day and age, most children are comfortable with using technology such as cellphones and the Internet. Teenagers are even more so, with a vast majority of them owning a mobile phone and, some, even their own computer. With this, companies and organizations have started to catch on and begin advertising in these areas, with even the Pope himself gaining interest.
Pope Benedict XVI today urged that Catholic priests exploit the "rich menu of options" available in order to grab the attention of younger people, according to Reuters. He stated, "Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources – images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites." Though, while he seemed keen on using this method to spread the influence of the church, he also asked the priests to remained cautious. "Priests present in the world of digital communications should be less notable for their media savvy than for their priestly heart," the Pope added.
The Vatican had been cautious about new technology for years, but has recently jumped in the deep end, flicking the switch on a new website during last year. This is as well as having recently claimed a presence on Facebook, in addition to offering the Pope"s messages and speeches to those with an iPhone or iPod touch. It goes to show that even the oldest and most traditional of groups isn"t resilient to the allure of the modern age.
