Microsoft is supposed to start its Games for Gold program for Xbox One owners in June, but it looks like one of the console"s launch titles is already free to download right now. The game is Powerstar Golf, the arcade golf game from developer Zoe Mode.
The Xbox.com website currently shows that Powerstar Golf can be downloaded to the Xbox One for the price of $0.00. The price is normally $19.99 for the game, which lets players compete in rounds of golf and gain special abilities to make the drive to the green a bit easier and more fun.
The price change was first spotted by members of Neowin"s forum community this morning and it apparently extends to multiple markets as the same price is being shown on the U.S. and Australian versions of Xbox.com. We have contacted Microsoft to see if this is a permanent price change for Powerstar Golf, a temporary sale or if there"s been some mistake made in pricing.
There"s also another option that the game has been turned into a "Free-to-play" title, with the core game available for free but making players pay for extra content via microtransactions.
Earlier in May, Microsoft said that Xbox One owners who have signed up for the Xbox Live Gold service will begin to get two free games a month. It starts in June with Halo: Spartan Assault and "Max: The Curse of Brotherhood."
Update: While Microsoft has yet to comment, it does look like Powerstar Golf has been turned into a free-to-play game, with users spending extra for individual courses.
Thanks to "compl3x" in our Neowin forums for the tip!
