In 2012, we reported that a company called Tobii was developing a hardware device for Windows PCs called Gaze that would allow users to control aspects of a PC with eye movement. While we have yet to see Tobii"s technology released to consumers, another company is hoping to sell ts own eye-tracking accessory. Like the Tobii Gaze, The Eye Tribe Tracker is being made for Windows devices and will connect to a PC or tablet via a USB port.
The device is the work of The Eye Tribe, based in Denmark, and the company announced this week it is now taking pre-orders for its hardware SDK. The $99 prototype can be ordered by developers who can start making apps with the technology immediately. A special mount for the prototype that will allow it to fit directly on a Surface Pro is also being offered to developers for an extra $50.
Shipments of the hardware SDK should start before the end of 2013. There"s no word on when a consumer version of The Eye Tribe Tracker will be released nor how much it would cost. The company has said it is establishing contacts with software and game developers so to push development of eye-controlled apps to the masses. The company also plans to expand its hardware support to Android-based devices at some point.
