ProtonMail Bridge update brings new Status View, localized encrypted mail, and more

ProtonMail Bridge is a tool that allows you to connect your local email client to ProtonMail across multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, and Linux (DEB and RPM). A new update for the application is offering several new features, primarily focusing on security and convenience.

ProtonMail users can use Apple Mail, Microsoft Outlook, or Mozilla Thunderbird, but they need ProtonMail Bridge. It is a service that runs in the background, quietly encrypting and decrypting emails that leave from and arrive at a computer. The new update, rolling out gradually, will benefit those on the paid ProtonMail plan.

The updated app promises to offer a better overview of email accounts. The developers have also reworked the Settings page. It now allows users to set the location of the email cache, and even perform a reset. The updated Status View now shows a lot more useful information in the Notifications. Users can see all their accounts at a glance, and instantly check available storage space for each.

The local email cache now holds full message bodies. This means ProtonMail Bridge stores messages that lie encrypted on the device itself. This allows faster retrieval as compared to remote servers. Users can finetune the local cache in Advanced settings.

The ProtonMail team said that if you run into any problems or want to provide general feedback, you can do so from the dedicated reporting feature in the app.
