ProtonMail has released version 3.0 of OpenPGPjs

The secure email provider, ProtonMail, has announced the availability of version 3.0 of OpenPGPjs, an open source OpenPGP library. While the update is pretty important in that it brings many enhancements to the millions of users who rely on OpenPGPjs, it is also significant because it paves the way for ProtonMail to roll out fully interoperability with PGP, which is planned for this Spring.

In blog post, ProtonMail said:

“The goal of the openPGPjs project is to make public-key cryptography not only available to users, but also to the global developer community. Simply put, the widespread availability of open-source and secure cryptography libraries is a prerequisite of the privacy revolution. As maintainers of the OpenPGPjs project, this is our priority.

Version 3 of OpenPGPjs also brings a number of enhancement that make it possible for ProtonMail to be fully interoperable with PGP, a new feature that is coming this Spring.”

While the ProtonMail team are the maintainers behind the software project, they have said in their announcement that the wider developer community is essential for the continuation of development of OpenPGPjs, and that they “welcome pull requests and comments.” You can read the full changelog for this release on the ProtonMail website, but be warned, it’s quite technical but the main take away is that it opens up interoperability with PGP.
