Loot boxes are something of a common sight in multiplayer games nowadays, but soon, Rocket League will be one popular game without them. The now Epic Games-owned developer announced the change today, saying it will be removing all paid, randomized loot boxes from its title later this year.
Psyonix implemented this microtransaction system in 2016, over a year after the competitive game"s launch on Windows and PlayStation 4. As for the reasoning behind this new venture, the studio said it is "dedicated to creating the best possible experience for our players all over the world."
There will be a new system implemented that shows exactly what players will be purchasing. The developer mentioned this will be similar in shape to how Fortnite changed its loot box mechanics earlier this year to show what players will be receiving - instead of a random selection - before a purchase is made.
As expected, the premium Rocket Pass, DLC Battle Cars, and event-based direct item purchases will still remain in the game as they are now. Although there"s no exact time frame for when this change will go live, Psyonix will be sharing more specifics about the shift, like what happens to existing loot boxes, in the coming months.
