Last week, Qualcomm announced that it would be rebranding its processors as "platforms", and that the Snapdragon 200-series would lose the Snapdragon branding in favor of Qualcomm Mobile. Despite the fact that Qualcomm"s website still uses the word "processor" to describe its chipsets pretty much everywhere it has a chance to, we"re seeing the first sign of that rebranding today, as the company announced the Qualcomm 205 Mobile Platform.
The 205 Mobile is a 1.1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A7 SoC that"s designed to bring 4G LTE connectivity to entry-level feature phones. You"ll most likely see devices with these chips in emerging markets, such as India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
Of course, the 2xx series of SoCs from Qualcomm have offered LTE for a few years now, since the Snapdragon 210 was introduced in September, 2014. The 205 offers even less power though, as the 210 is 1.1GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7.
In fact, the two chipsets are similar in that they both offer an Adreno 304 GPU and the Snapdragon X5 LTE modem, which provides Category 4 LTE, or 150Mbps download speeds and 50Mbps upload speeds. The rest of the specs for the 205 are decidedly lower end, including support for a VGA display and up to a 3MP camera that records up to 480p30fps video.
Qualcomm says that the 28nm chip is available beginning today, and you can expect to see devices shipping with it beginning in the second quarter of this year.
