Qualcomm"s flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 820, was announced back in November and will allegedly be powering numerous high-end smartphones from most manufacturers this year. Now, the company has announced the new generation of its mid range chipsets that will be powering the low cost devices from various OEMs.
The latest range of Qualcomm chipsets includes the Snapdragon 425, 435 and 625, which will be replacing the Snapdragon 410/412, 430 and 617 respectively. All the new chipsets offer improved performance over their predecessors but also bring plenty of new features to the mid range. Details of these chipsets are as follows:
- Four Cortex-A53 cores with a max clock speed of 1.4 GHz
- Adreno 308 GPU
- Faster LTE with the X6 modem.
- Dedicated Hexagon DSP for multimedia and sensor processing, resulting in improved battery life.
- Dual ISP for images up to 16 megapixels and advanced photography features.
- Quick Charge 2.0
- Eight Cortex-A53 cores with a max clock speed of 1.4 GHz
- Better gaming performance with Adreno 505 GPU
- X8 LTE modem
- Support for image capture up to 21 megapixels
- Quick Charge 3.0
- Eight Cortex-A53 cores with clock speed higher than 2 GHz
- Advanced gaming graphics with the Adreno 506 GPU
- 35 percent lower power consumption than the Snapdragon 617
- X9 LTE modem
- Support for 4K video capture, images up to 24 megapixels and front facing captures up to 13 megapixels
- Quick Charge 3.0
In addition to these chipsets, Qualcomm also announced the industry"s first gigabit-class LTE modem in the form of the Snapdragon X16. The modem will support fibre-like LTE Cat 16 speeds, which will prove highly beneficial for 360 degree virtual reality content and VoLTE. The launch of the X16 modem is a significant step towards the next generation of wireless networks.
Qualcomm has revealed that devices powered by its mid-range chipsets and those featuring the X16 modem would start shipping in the second half of 2016.
