Qualcomm introduces a beefed up Snapdragon 865 called the Snapdragon 870

Today, Qualcomm is announcing the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform. Now, you"re probably already wondering why this exists when the Snapdragon 888 was announced last month. While the Snapdragon 888 is the generational leap that we get every year from Qualcomm, the Snapdragon 870 is not. It"s more of an iteration of the Snapdragon 865+; a Snapdragon 865++, if you will.

It uses the same Kryo 585 CPU and Adreno 650 GPU that we saw across the Snapdragon 865 series, but now, the prime core can be clocked at up to 3.2GHz instead of 3.1GHz. Other than that, Qualcomm didn"t talk up any changes. It has the Spectra 480 ISP, Hexagon 698 processor, and FastConnect 6800 for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.

"Building upon the success of Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus, the new Snapdragon 870 was designed to address OEM and mobile industry requirements," said Kedar Kondap, vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. "Snapdragon 870 will power a selection of flagship devices from key customers including Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi."

Devices with the Snapdragon 870 are going to be announced in the first quarter of this year, coming from companies including Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, OPPO, and Xiaomi. Qualcomm noted that all of these companies are also committed to releasing Snapdragon 888 devices.
