Qualcomm announced its next-generation flagship chipset in November, the Snapdragon 835, promising 27% better performance with 40% less power consumption than its predecessor. Unfortunately, that"s all that the company has formally unveiled, despite various leaks and rumors.
One of those leaks said that the chipset will use an Adreno 540 GPU and now, that GPU has shown up on the GFXBench website. It"s an early development board, so the actual results should be taken with a grain of salt, but the specs seem to tell us a bit about the chipset itself.
The listed specs show an octa-core CPU that"s clocked at 2.2GHz. This fits with recent rumors, which also say that those eight cores will be the next iteration of Qualcomm"s Kryo technology, called Kryo 200. Of course, all eight cores won"t be clocked at 2.2GHz; instead, four cores would be clocked that way, and then there would be four lower-powered, more efficient cores.
The specific device that it was tested on runs Android 7.0 Nougat (Windows 10 Mobile doesn"t support the new chipset just yet, although it likely will). It has a 5.9-inch 1440p display, 3.7GB of RAM, and 53GB of internal storage. The rear camera is 20MP, but the front camera is more interesting, as it"s 12MP and it supports 4K video. This is most likely a device that will never see the light of day, but it"s cool to know that 4K front cameras are around the corner.
To be clear, the only thing that"s for sure here is that there"s a GPU that"s called the Adreno 540 out there right now. It might have a different name when it hits the market, as it"s not clear why Qualcomm isn"t doing a sixth generation Adreno GPU instead of another fifth generation model.
The Snapdragon 835 chipset is expected to make its debut at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next year in the Samsung Galaxy S8.
