Are you one of over 100 million people to have shopped at RadioShack? If so, it looks like the company is breaking a promise to its customers by attempting to auction the data from its former customers. This auction is the result of RadioShack filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier last month.
According to Ars Technica, the company is planning to auction off the data of 117 million customers which will include names, phone numbers, physical mailing addresses, e-mail addresses, and client purchase history at the retailer. The auction intends to generate funds to repay the debt that RadioShack created amounting to over a billion dollars, although there"s no word how much the customer data is worth
Texas and Tennessee regulators have challenged the sale of information stating the sale is against RadioShack"s own online policy and signs featured at its physical locations. To make matters even more complicated, AT&T is stating that RadioShack has no right to sell the data becausea part of the data actually belongs to AT&T via its mobile phone partnership with the company.
