Raspberry Pi Zero launches with $5 price tag

The Raspberry Pi foundation has today announced another member of the Raspberry Pi family, the Raspberry Pi Zero. Roughly a year after the most recent Raspberry Pi release, the Raspberry Pi Zero is available from today and is priced at just $5.

The Raspberry Pi Zero features:

  • A Broadcom BCM2835 application processor - 1GHz ARM11 core (40% faster than Raspberry Pi 1)
  • 512MB of LPDDR2 SDRAM
  • A micro-SD card slot
  • A mini-HDMI socket for 1080p60 video output
  • Micro-USB sockets for data and power
  • An unpopulated 40-pin GPIO header - Identical pinout to Model A+/B+/2B
  • An unpopulated composite video header
  • Our smallest ever form factor, at 65mm x 30mm x 5mm

Being a low cost board means that it does contain some limitations over its more powerful siblings. For example, there is no Ethernet chip and the board contains less RAM. However, as with other Raspberry Pi devices, the Raspberry Pi Zero runs Raspbian and many popular applications including Scratch, Minecraft and Sonic Pi.

Despite the board already selling out at several online outlets, those eager to get their hands on a device can pick one up free with a copy of the December issue of MagPi.
