The Razer Phone made its debut towards the end of last year, marketed as a phone that would cater to the needs of mobile gamers. Since that time, other companies have offered up their take on a gaming smartphone, and the market has become somewhat crowded. Despite this, there isn"t much consumer fascination with this genre of device, but that doesn"t mean that companies will stop producing them anytime soon. If a new report is to be believed, it looks like Razer is readying its successor to the Razer Phone, set to arrive before the end of the year.
During the annual ChinaJoy Digital Entertainment Expo & Conference, Chen Xiaoping, who is the vice president of Razer, stated that a new phone should be available in China by the end of 2018. Apparently, media outlets are speculating that the upcoming smartphone will be running Qualcomm"s unannounced Snapdragon 855 processor, simply because Xiaoping didn"t clarify that it would be running a currently available SoC. He was quoted as saying that the new device will use the “latest chipset”. Qualcomm has typically announced its flagship mobile processor towards the end of the year.
It will be interesting to see what kind of improvements Razer will bring to the table with its follow up gaming smartphone. While the design of the original wasn"t anything to write home about, the Razer Phone was praised for offering a display with 120Hz refresh rate, large 4,000 mAh battery, and loud dual front-facing speakers. The price for the smartphone was also relatively fair, being offered at $699 in the United States. Hopefully, Razer will be able to maintain an acceptable price, when it announces its successor later this year.
