RealNetworks buys Trymedia

RealNetworks, which develops online games for Nintendo"s Wii console, has purchased game-syndication company Trymedia from Macrovision to reach more players. San Francisco-based Trymedia helps Web portals, online retailers and game developers distribute personal-computer games over the Internet. The deal should close later this year, Seattle-based RealNetworks said Friday in a statement. Terms weren"t disclosed. RealNetworks will use Trymedia"s partnerships with companies such as Time Warner"s AOL and Yahoo to extend its reach into the online video-game market, spokeswoman Audrey Craipain said. RealNetworks" fourth-quarter revenue from online games, including Monopoly and Scrabble, gained 29 percent to $30.9 million, almost one-fifth of total sales.
