Red debuts its new nearly $80K 8K camera

The Red Digital Cinema Camera Company started nearly 20 years ago with the ambition to offer an affordable 4K digital camera. Today, the firm is known for building excellent but pricey modular cameras that have quite the following in the commercial and prosumer space, aside from being known for pushing boundaries; the company has now released something new with its full-frame entry into the Weapon line with the Monstro 8K VV.

The Monstro 8K VV captures in 8K at up to 60fps and can produce high-quality stills using its 35.4MP sensor. Like its other cameras in the Weapon line, the new camera can shoot Red Code RAW and Apple ProRes or Avid DNxHD/HR simultaneously. As far as other benefits, it offers "unprecedented dynamic range and breathtaking color accuracy with full support for [the] IPP2 pipeline".

With all of this new technology, the camera won"t come cheap, costing $79,500 just for the guts of the unit. This new product will be replacing the Red Dragon 8K VV and those that have pre-ordered that model will be offered the Monstro starting today. Although you can now pre-order, the new camera won"t begin shipping until sometime in early 2018.
