Earlier this month, RED"s Hydrogen One handset passed through the FCC, giving us a new glimpse at the upcoming smartphone. Now, it looks like things are becoming more clear, with release dates for the phone being shared.
Jim Jannard, who is the founder of RED, which is producing the Hydrogen One, posted a lengthy statement about the device on the H4Vuser.net forums. Laying down a timeline of when he expects the phone to arrive, Jannard stated that there could be delays, but the chances of that happening are currently pretty slim.
The Houdini Developer"s Model will be the first unit made available to the public. RED will hold a special event that will take place at RED Studios in Hollywood, California on August 31. The quantity of the developer handset will be extremely limited. The units will come in Black and will be available on a first come, first served basis. There will be a Titanium version of the Houdini as well, but there is no confirmation as to when it will be made available. If interested in securing a developer model, you will already need to have a pre-order in place, and then you can email houdini@h4v.com to have them update your order.
The official release date for those that pre-ordered the Hydrogen One from RED will be October 9. Jannard did not indicate whether customers will receive their units on the same day. The aluminum model in Black will be shipping first, followed by the Titanium model. Apparently, the Titanium model has been quite difficult to produce, and it is expected to become "highly desirable", as it will be "extremely hard to get for several months even after the official launch".
Those that are looking for a more traditional means of purchasing the Hydrogen One, it will be made available through AT&T, Verizon, and Telcel, on November 2. The aluminum variant of the phone will be among the first offerings, arriving in Black and Shadow colors, and costing $1295. Those holding out for the Titanium model will need to stick it out until sometime in 2019.
