It"s been some time coming, but nubia"s gaming brand, RedMagic, has announced the latest in its line of flagship phones, the RedMagic 6 series. The latest iteration was developed in conjunction with Tencent Games, and its standout feature is that it has a 165Hz display, the first phone in the world to do so.
The lineup actually consists of two different phones this time around, the RedMagic 6 and the RedMagic 6 Pro. Most of the specs will be similar, but the RedMagic 6 Pro has a smaller 4,500mAh battery that charges at 120W, and the regular RedMagic 6 has a 5,050mAh battery, but only supports 66W charging. Additionally, the RedMagic 6 will pack 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 128GB of storage, while, the Pro takes that up 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. RedMagic also says the 6 Pro will come with "new" UFS 3.1 storage, with single-channel bandwidth up to 11.6Gbps.
Update: RedMagic has clarified there is no difference between the storage in the RedMagic 6 and 6 Pro.
Otherwise, the specs are similar. Both phones come with a Snapdragon 888 chipset, cooled by the new ICE 6.0 cooling system, which includes an internal fan spinning at 20,000rpm, a copper layer, and a vapor chamber. RedMagic claims the heat transfer coefficient increases by 500% with the new fan, lowering the CPU temperature by as much as 16 degrees Celsius. The fan promises to be relatively quiet, at 28dB, and it should last up to 30,000 hours. RedMagic also says the 6 Pro uses a special heat dissipation material, and there"s a new dual-fan Ice Dock you can get to take that even further.
In addition to a 165Hz refresh rate, the 6.8-inch AMOLED display has Full HD+ resolution and a 500Hz touch sampling rate for a single finger, or a 360Hz sampling rate for multi-finger interactions. The shoulder triggers have also been upgraded with a 400Hz touch sampling rate, up from the 320Hz of the RedMagic 5S. As for the cameras. there"s still a triple-camera setup on the back.
On the software side, the phone will run Android 11 with the new RedMagic OS 4.0 on top, and it packs a few new features, like Tencent SolarCore 3.1 gaming engine, a new Magic Write 2.0 technology to improve the storage performance, and RAM Boost, which Redmagic claims will make the 12GB of RAM be "used like" 18GB.
The RedMagic 6 and 6 Pro will be available in China on March 11, with the former costing ¥3,799 ($587.33) and the latter going for ¥4,399 ($680.09). For global markets, an announcement should be coming on March 12, as indicated on the launch website.
Aside from the phones themselves, RedMagic has also launched the RedMagic Watch, with a 1.39-inch round display, 5ATM water resistance, and 16 sports modes. RedMagic says it has a special football mode, which can track running distance, trajectory, and even generate a heat distribution graph that should tell the user the user"s "best defense position with offensive habits". Another accessory it announced today was a gaming adaptor that will allow the RedMagic 6 series to output a 165Hz image using DisplayPort 1.4.
