Microsoft launched the Windows 8 Consumer Preview version on February 29. It"s been a little over a month since its release and according to a new report, the number of Windows 8 users worldwide is still just a small percentage compared to the current and more established PC operating systems.
Net Applications reports that for March 2012, Windows 8 was used by just 0.11 percent of PC owners worldwide. By contrast, the much older Windows NT, at 0.12 percent, and Windows 2000, at 0.16 percent, have more users than Windows 8.
The most used OS worldwide remains Windows XP. Net Applications shows it was used by 46.86 percent of PC owners in March, which is actually a gain compared to February 2012 when it had a 45.39 percent market share. Windows 7 came in second with 37.54 percent, which is a loss compared to February when it had 38.12 percent of the OD market share.
Windows Vista comes in third for March with 7.65 percent, followed by Mac OS X 10.6 at 2.79 percent and Mac OS X 10.7 at 2.59 percent. Linux is well behind at 0.98 percent but is still well ahead of Windows 8 at this point.
