When Windows 8 was officially launched just over four weeks ago by Microsoft, the company did not go into specifics of how many apps made for the "Modern" UI were available to download from the Windows Store. However, a report from WinAppUpdate.com claimed there were over 9,000 apps worldwide available for download for the launch date.
This week, the same people behind that site posted up a new app number update on their Twitter account. According to their data, as of Thursday the number of Windows 8 apps in the store number "20,610 apps worldwide." The number of apps exceeded the 20,000 mark on Tuesday, they claim.
Of that number, 87 percent of the apps in the store (17,958) are free to download. As we have mentioned before, WinAppUpdate.com does not count desktop apps in its numbers. Desktop apps are listed in the store but users cannot actually purchase or download those apps in the store itself.
These new figures mean that Microsoft has been publishing more than 2,500 new Windows 8 apps to the Store every week since the launch of the OS. If this pace continues, the Windows Store could reach the 50,000 app mark well before the end of March 2013.
