The future of Battlefield at EA is going through a major shift as the publisher is making changes to leadership and the direction of the long-running shooter franchise.
Starting off, current DICE General Manager Oskar Gabrielson is leaving the studio at the end of the year, with Rebecka Coutaz, formerly from Ubisoft Annecy, taking the position. At the same time, Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella taking up the Battlefield franchise overseeing duties.
Zampella has had a hand in hit series like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, Titanfall, as well as Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, and Apex Legends. "I believe the structure, process, and vision he brings will enable Battlefield to excel like never before," chief operating officer at EA Laura Miele says. "No one knows shooters and live services better than Vince."
EA also confirmed a connected universe for Battlefield is also at the works. This will include multiple games with shared characters and cross-over storylines that are planned to come out from various studios around the world. Battlefield 2042 launched with only multiplayer content, dropping the single-player aspects entirely. But this new move could mean we will be seeing more Battlefield campaigns in the future.
As a part of this connected universe initiative, new Battlefield experiences from DICE, Ripple Effect — formerly DICE LA and makers of Battlefield Portal mode —, and Marcus Lehto — designer behind Halo who now has a new studio in Seattle area — are incoming. EA has previously announced a mobile Battlefield game as well, being developed by Industrial Toys.
We gave Battlefield 2042 a 6.5/10 verdict in our review due to the glaring issues seen at launch. DICE has pledged to keep bringing updates with fixes, and just recently another major bug fixing patch landed, though not without introducing fresh issues.
