Return to Monkey Island announced, original creators returning to continue the story

Devolver Digital today surprise-announced Return to Monkey Island, a brand-new entry in the popular adventure game series that began over three decades ago. The title is being developed by Terrible Toybox, the studio of Monkey Island co-creator Ron Gilbert, who kicked off the franchise alongside Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman in 1990. Catch the reveal trailer below.

Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman are the designers and writers of this Monkey Island adventure, with Dominic Armato returning as Guybrush Threepwood voice actor.

"Announcing Return to Monkey Island, the long-awaited follow-up to the legendary Secret of Monkey Island and Monkey Island 2: LeChuck"s Revenge," reads the announcement by Devolver Digital, the publisher behind the new entry. Of course, being the IP holder, Lucasfilm Games is attached to the project too.

While the franchise received three more games following leChuck"s Revenge — The Curse of Monkey Island, Escape from Monkey Island, and Tales of Monkey Island — the new entry will be sidestepping them altogether.

Not much additional information was attached to the announcement, but according to Ron Gilbert and Dave Grossman, the team has been working on this new project in complete secrecy for the past two years. Terrible Toybox has previously released Thimbleweed Park, the well-received comedic adventure game in 2017. While the title was a spiritual successor to classics like The Secret of Monkey Island (and Maniac Mansion), fans will soon be able to finally jump back into the iconic universe.

The aptly named Return to Monkey Island will launch sometime this year. Information regarding the setting and launch platforms will be dropping later.
