Research in Motion may be taking some drastic moves in order to get back its position in the smartphone marketplace. A new rumor at Boy Genius Report, using unnamed sources, claims that RIM has pulled the plug on all of its future smartphone products except for the one that will be using RIM"s upcoming Blackberry 10 operating system.
The smartphone that will run Blackberry 10 is currently being developed under the code name London. The story claims that RIM is shopping the smartphone around to wireless carriers.
RIM has already announced that the first smartphone with Blackberry 10 running things inside won"t be ready until sometime in the second half of 2012 due to the company wanting to wait until it could get dual-core processors and support for the faster LTE-based wireless networks.
Earlier this week, rumors hit the Internet that RIM"s board of directors was considering the prospect of demoting RIM"s Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis from their co-chairmen positions.
In any case it"s clear that RIM needs to do something, and fast, to recover from all of its 2011 issues or risk having the business lose more market share in the smartphone industry to its competitors.
