Hundreds of Foxconn workers living in a dorm at the plant in Chengdu rioted Monday evening, allegedly taking advantage of grievances against security workers who were trying to stop a thief making a get-away.
The Want China Times website reports that the disturbance started in the male dormitory for Foxconn workers in Kaoxinxi district in northwest Chengdu. Two security guards had called out to stop a thief, but some employees with grudges against the security guards instead helped the thief get away and hundreds of others joined in throwing trash cans, chairs, pots, bottles and fireworks from the upper floors of the building causing damage to the facilities.
Eventually police were called in and it took them around two hours to calm the situation with dozens of arrests made.
Last year, three workers died in an explosion at the plant with 15 others injured. The history of Foxconn hasn"t been a positive one either, as one CEO even compared the employees to animals, and Apple was forced to comment on the conditions of the workers, later carrying out their own inspections earlier this year.
The company is mainly responsible for making liquid crystal displays in electronics products, with Apple as a major customer.
