Psyonix announced today that Rocket League has just gotten cross-play functionality across all platforms, meaning finally, PlayStation 4 players can now join games that have Xbox One, Steam, and Nintendo Switch players.
This breaks up the old system that paired everyone but PlayStation 4 players with each other while those on the Sony console could only cross-play with PC players - which also meant these specific matches were closed off from other consoles.
Although Sony has been dragging its feet when it comes to enabling PlayStation 4 cross-play support with competing consoles, the company conceded and gave permission to add official cross-play functionality to the battle-royale giant Fortnite last year. Rocket League"s new addition makes it only the second game to have the feature.
Psyonix also said that the long-time-coming cross-platform party system will also be released with Rocket League"s first update of 2019. This would allow friends on any system to form up a party to matchmake together in official modes. Making parties for private matches with cross-platform players is possible right now, however.
Cross-play functionality is enabled by default in Rocket League, but those who want to make sure can check if the Cross-Platform Play in checkbox is ticked by going to the options menu.
