Rumor: Sony to reveal PlayStation 4 VR helmet in March

Sony"s HMZ-T1 Personal 3D Viewer came out in 2012 and could be a clue as to what the PS4 VR helmet looks like.

There"s a new rumor that Sony is preparing to announce a major new peripheral for the PlayStation 4 that could signal a new front in the console war. TechRadar claims, via an unnamed source, that Sony will reveal a virtual reality helmet for the console at the 2014 Game Developers Conference in San Francisco in mid-March.

In fact, the article says their insider has actually used a prototype of the VR helmet. The source is quoted as saying, "The quality and resolution are really, really good ... People will definitely be impressed with what Sony"s built".

The story hints that Sony will concentrate more on showing the helmet itself for its first reveal at GDC and then announce and demo games that it supports at the E3 video game trade show in June. Today"s story didn"t mention a release date or price for the PS4 VR add-on.

This isn"t the first time that Sony has been reported to be making a VR helmet for its PlayStation hardware. Back in 2011, Sony was publicly working with prototypes that the company admitted could be used for "virtual reality type experiences." Sony has also released head-mounted 3D displays that could be a precursor to a PS4 VR helmet.
