Bloomberg and a few of its sources are reporting that Sony is planning to unveil an update for the PlayStation Portable on January 27th at the Sony Computer Entertainment Tokyo Event, while sources also say that the PSP Phone will also make an appearance next month at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Patrick Seybold, a Sony spokesman declined to say whether the Sony Tokyo Event will include the announcement of the new PlayStation Portable, leaked images of the device have appeared on the internet showing features such as a front facing camera, twin thumb sticks and a microphone.
Sony is aiming to gain market share back as Nintendo and Apple currently reign as the top dogs at the moment. Since the PSP was introduced back in 2004, it has failed to catch up to the popularity of other gaming systems such as the Nintendo DS.
The PlayStation Portable originally required retailers to stock and sell a physical storage media called the Universal Media Disk. The PSP Go which was released back in 2009 Sony did away with the Universal Media Disk offering only the option to download from the PlayStation Store and it is believed the same concept will be used with the new PSP2 and PSP Phone.
