At the moment, Sprint is the only wireless carrier among the four major ones in the US that has a true unlimited data plan for its customers, without broadband caps, throttling or overage fees. When rumors started a few weeks ago about Sprint being able to sell Apple"s iPhone 5 when it launches later this year, some people speculated that Sprint might do away with its unlimited data service. Now a new report from Bloomberg claims via unnamed sources that Sprint"s iPhone 5 customers will indeed benefit from an unlimited data plan.
If true, that would give Sprint a huge advantage over the two current iPhone carriers in the US, AT&T and Verizon. AT&T did away with its own unlimited data plan in 2010 and Verizon did the same earlier this summer, although people who had unlimited plans before Verizon"s change are grandfathered in if they decide to upgrade.
The story also adds, again via unnamed sources, that Sprint decided to delay the launch of an unnamed smartphone that supported Sprint"s WiMax 4G network in order to concentrate its efforts on the launch of the iPhone 5. Officially, neither Sprint nor Apple have confirmed that Sprint will be selling the next iPhone when it launches.
Meanwhile, Apple still has yet to issue one of its "next big thing" media invites for its iPhone 5 launch. The company is now expected to offer the iPhone 5 for sale sometime in October along with a refresh of its iPod portable media players. It"s also expected to launch iOS 5, the next version of its mobile operating system, in the same time period.
