Samsung and Marvell have announced a new, jointly developed, system-on-a-chip (SoC) that’s designed to improve 5G network performance. The product is designed for use in massive MIMO and other advanced radios and will be available to Tier One operators.
According to Samsung, the new SoC can support both 5G and 4G networks at the same time. In addition, it saves up to 70% in energy usage compared to previous solutions. The new SoC also uses newer technologies that boost the capacity and coverage of cellular radios while having a smaller physical footprint.
Commenting on the new product, Junehee Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of R&D, Networks Business at Samsung Electronics, said:
“We are excited to extend our collaboration with Marvell to unveil a new SoC that will combine both companies’ strengths in innovation to advance 5G network solutions. Samsung prioritizes the development of high-impact 5G solutions that offer a competitive edge to our operators. We look forward to introducing this latest solution to the market shortly.”
The two companies announced last year that they were extending their collaboration to work on more areas of Radio Access Network (RAN) technologies together. At the time, the two said that wanted to build products that can meet the “dramatic increase in compute power required” for massive MIMO deployments. The product that was announced today will be available in the second quarter.
