With the Windows Phone 7.5, or Mango, update this close to being released to the public, Samsung has announced plans to release a new smartphone that supports Windows Phone 7.5. CNet reports that the phone is called the Omnia W and is basically the successor to Samsung"s previous Windows Phone 7 product, the Omnia 7. The phone will go on sale in Italy, of all places, by the end of October. There"s no word on when or even if the US will get access to the Omnia W. Pricing has also not been announced.
The new smartphone features a 3.7 inch Super AMOLED display which is slightly smaller compared to the Omnia 7"s 4 inch screen. The Omnia W does have a faster 1.4 GHz processor but it is also just a single core chip. It contains 512 MB of RAM, 8 GB of storage, a five megapixel camera along with a front facing camera and more. The design of the Omnia 7"s case is also more rounded than the rather blocky look of the Omnia 7.
While the smartphone will allow its users access to all of Window Phone 7.5"s software and application improvements, Samsung will also give users of the Omnia W access to its own proprietary smartphone apps. That includes a Video Call app for some video conferencing and chatting even on a 3G network. It also has Samsung"s own eReader app and Samsung AllShare, which lets users transfer content between the Omnia W and DLNA-based devices.
