Samsung is reporting that a team of researchers at its Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) has developed a graphene ball material for batteries that boosts capacity by 45% and allowed for charging speeds five times that of standard lithium-ion batteries. Samsung is hoping that this next-generation battery will benefit mobile devices and electric vehicles.
Dr. Son In-hyuk, who led the team, said:
“Our research enables mass synthesis of multifunctional composite material graphene at an affordable price. At the same time we were able to considerably enhance the capabilities of lithium-ion batteries in an environment where the markets for mobile devices and electric vehicles is growing rapidly. Our commitment is to continuously explore and develop secondary battery technology in light of these trends.”
According to Samsung, batteries using the graphene ball material only require 12 minutes to reach a full charge. Additionally, the company noted that the material is suitable for electric vehicles because it’s able to maintain a highly stable 60-degree Celsius temperature, which is key for use in electric vehicles.
In the future, we will see batteries used for more and more things to help reduce the amount of energy being consumed. A good example being the Tesla PowerWall. With innovations like graphene ball material, batteries become more useful.
