Earlier today Samsung and Google announced that their press event to announce a new smartphone product would not happen on Tuesday, October 11 after all.
The companies were pretty vague about the reason for such a move this morning. Now AllThingsD.com reports that the real reason for the delay was not because of a delay in the product itself but for a more emotional reason: the death this week of Apple founder Steve Jobs. In an updated statement, both Samsung and Google jointly said, "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs’s passing." Jobs passed away on Wednesday at the age of 56.
The story also said that the decision to delay the press event was made late on Thursday night by the top executives of both Samsung and Google. The October 11 event was rumored to not only be the time to announce a new Samsung smartphone but also to launch Android 4.0, the next version of Google"s mobile operating system. So far neither Samsung nor Google have announced a new date or location for the press event.
Two days after the passing of Steve Jobs, people are still dealing with the death of the founder of Apple. Venture Beat reports that dozens of people are still gathering in front of Apple"s big New York City store to pay tribute to Jobs as well as in front of Apple"s world headquarters in Cupertino, California and at Jobs" residence in Palo Alto, California.
