Samsung halts shipments of its Galaxy Note7 smartphone amid reports of units catching fire

Samsung"s latest Galaxy Note is clearly one of the best handsets that the company has ever built, but today"s news has the investors worried that potential quality issues might hinder revenues, which are expected to help in the face of fierce competition from Apple"s upcoming iPhone.

The South Korean giant told Reuters that it is halting some shipments of the Galaxy Note7 to perform additional quality testing, in order to determine the cause of the recent reports of units catching fire when charging. The news drove investors to wipe off about $7 billion of the company"s market value on Thursday.

While this could be a big problem for Samsung if it turns out to be a widespread issue, it could be that the five self-reported cases have something to do with using third-party chargers or USB Type-C cables, which has been the case in the recent past with other devices that use the new standard.

In any case, our own Timi Cantisano is impressed with the Note7 so far, which is the first since the original Galaxy Note that he considers truly appealing.
