Samsung is shipping phones with varying camera sensors in Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

Samsung is experiencing strong sales with the company"s latest Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge devices. The demand is great enough that even the gold variant is having a hard time staying on store shelves. But all of that demand has lead to an interesting find: these phones aren"t all using the same hardware.

In an interesting find by SamMobile, the site noticed the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge both included Samsung"s own ISOCELL image sensor in the teardown of each device. This was a surprise, given that the devices provided for journalists to play with included Sony"s high-end IMX240 sensor, of which camera reviews were based on.

In a statement given to The Verge, Samsung responded to the news of different sensors used, claiming "the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge utilize camera sensors from several different vendors. Like all of the technology used in our products, they meet our strict global quality and performance standards". While side by side comparisons using both image sensors are initially supporting that statement, it"s still odd that Samsung would keep this info quiet at all.

Perhaps it"s due to Sony"s recent lack of production with camera sensors that made Samsung use its own ISOCELL sensor. However, the true reason why Samsung"s devices aren"t receiving consistent camera hardware is not yet known. Hopefully the differences between camera sensors are negligible and both can produce great quality images for owners.
