Samsung issues an urgent fingerprint reader security update for the Galaxy S10 and S10+

In-display fingerprint readers are starting to become the norm, despite the quality of the interaction being less reliable than its physical counterpart. Luckily, it seems like some aspects can be improved via software, as Samsung has now issued an update that will improve the experience for its Galaxy S10 line of phones.

The update, which was spotted by the folks at GSMArena, is apparently an urgent update, arriving as a pop-up notification from the Galaxy Store app. The download is quite small, coming in at 6.9MB and doesn"t require a reboot. Unfortunately, there are no notes attached that explain what exactly is improved but judging from the publication"s reaction, it looks as though the fingerprint reader is a bit more snappy and responsive.

It was reported last week that a 3D printed fingerprint could bypass the fingerprint reader found on the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. Since the latest update is dubbed as a security update, there is always the possibility that Samsung made improvements to the sensor, making it more difficult to be fooled. Unfortunately, we do not have access to a 3D printed fingerprint to test this.

If you"re debating on purchasing a Galaxy S10, you might want to check out Neowin"s review of the Galaxy S10+ where Senior Editor Rich Woods describes it as "a beautiful and pleasant device to use" but also discusses some of the negatives when it comes to using such a slick device on a daily basis. If you"re looking for something a bit more futuristic, you might want to look into the Galaxy Fold.
