Samsung reportedly drops Snapdragon 810 from upcoming Galaxy S6

The Galaxy S5 came in two versions: Exynos and Snapdragon

Samsung has traditionally offered two versions of its flagship devices: one with its own in-house developed Exynos processor, while the other featured Qualcomm’s SoCs. However, Samsung may completely abandon the Qualcomm version for its next Galaxy S6 flagship.

According to a report from Bloomberg, the South Korean manufacturer has had disappointing results while testing Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon 810, a very powerful chipset bound for many of the upcoming flagships. When pushed, the chip would overheat and create problems for Samsung’s device.

As such the company is supposedly completely dropping Qualcomm and the Snapdragon from its next flagship. While the Exynos chips offer similar performance, the clear problem here is that Qualcomm’s chips have traditionally been miles ahead of the competition when it comes to connectivity. As such Samsung’s device may suffer on that front if it does indeed drop the Snapdragon.

Also interesting to note is that other manufacturers, such as LG and HTC are set to use the same chipset, the Snapdragon 810, in their upcoming flagships. Whether they’ve managed to create better cooling systems or are simply underusing the chipset remains to be seen once we get our hands on the devices later this year.
