Samsung states method used to defeat Galaxy S8 iris scanner is an unrealistic scenario

It was a few days ago when we reported that the iris scanner on the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ was defeated with a printout. Now, it appears that Samsung thinks it"s a scenario that is "hard to see happening in real life".

The spokesperson goes on to explain, that in order to replicate the scenario shown in the video, you would need a camera that can shoot in infrared, which is no longer available on the market. Along with a clear image of the person"s iris, you"ll also still need to find a way to obtain their handset.

While all of the above is true, Chaos Computer Club (CCC), the ones responsible for defeating the iris scanner, maintain that the iris scanner has vulnerabilities and that a traditional PIN would be, in comparison, a better option. However, Samsung has stuck by the iris scanner in its smartphones, stating that the technology is “one of the safest ways to keep your phone locked” and that a person’s iris patterns are "virtually impossible to replicate.”
